I enjoy 1-1’s, they offer a chance to break out of the office environment, take a walk for a couple of hours and stop the fly wheel. This 2 hour session offers me a chance to reflect and discuss where I am, what’s going on, highlight any challenges and opportunities, both at home and within the business. Tim listens as I navigate through my download, asking questions and stimulating further discussions along the way. Often it’s simply a chance for me to defrag and re-align my thoughts and energies. But on occasions I have a roadblock or problem that I need more support to overcome, and Tim steps in to offer some thoughts and options for consideration. I always leave the 1-1’s with solid focus and I feel energised, allowing me to tackle and achieve my personal and business goals.

I joined Nexus at a critical time in the history of the business. We had launched an ambitious digital transformation strategy underpinned by significant cultural and operational change. That included moving to a fully remote working business model where all employees would work permanently at home. Challenges ranged from exiting properties in London and Oxford to raising funds for technology investment, and completing a critical restructure. At times the pressure was intense – but the support and expertise of the group kept me going. Not just the monthly meetings and coaching sessions but the calls and emails simply asking, “are you OK?”. And guest speakers like Mark Fritz inspired the way we led the team through change. The group supported me through an MBO in 2019 – including introducing me to the bank and lawyers who supported the deal. Leveraging the combined personal networks of 11 CEOs is a massive benefit of membership.Ultimately the value of Nexus is measured in results. Our remote working business model gave us a competitive advantage during the Covid-19 pandemic. We’ve been working through platforms like Zoom and Teams since 2017 so it was business as usual for us while others were struggling to get to grips with lockdown. And our year has culminated with us winning the Employer of the Year Award at the Investors in People Awards 2020. The part Nexus has played in our journey cannot be underestimated.
After 11 years in Oman, I am now back in the UK and immediately decided to rejoin the same group to give me a safe haven to discuss anything on my mind.
